Memorial for Leif

We'll be holding a memorial for Leif this Saturday, November 16. We apologize for the late notice, but we'd like to do it while everyone is in town. That means that we need help getting the word out. If you think someone would like to be there, they're invited.

We'll hold it at Waterfall Arts in Belfast, 256 High Street, Belfast, ME starting at 6:00pm.

Please bring your favorite Leif story to share. We'll have a microphone and a pretty easy audience.

This is a potluck. Please bring something to eat and drink, and enough to share. Family-friendly, and alcohol allowed. Special bonus points will be awarded for things that Leif liked, but anything will do. There is a kitchen on-site, so if you need to warm it up, we can accommodate.

UPDATE: Flowers are welcome tonight, but perhaps better would be donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or the science education nonprofit of your choice.

If you need to ask any questions, feel free to contact Mike at 410-350-5000 or Scott at 207-323-0609.

Update with hotel info compiled by Erica Buswell and Becky:

Some things you should know about getting to Belfast

Travel Arrangements
Belfast and Brooks are in lovely mid-coast Maine. If you are flying here, the major airports that serve the area are in Portland (PWM) and Bangor (BGR). Portland is located about 2 hour’s drive from Belfast; Bangor is located about 1 hour’s drive from Belfast. Flights to PWM are generally cheaper than flights to BGR. Smaller regional airports in Rockland (45 min.) and Augusta (1 hour from Belfast) are also served by Cape Air.

The Amtrack Downeaster provides rail service to Portland, Freeport, and Brunswick from Boston.

Travel Accommodations
Belfast has a number of different places to stay, ranging from cheap and simple, to more luxurious and expensive. Here’s a few suggestions.

Other things to do while you are in the area
There’s lots of lovely shops and fun hangouts in downtown Belfast. Good eats, too, especially the Belfast Food Coop, and Chase’s Daily. Belfast is also a convenient distance from day trips all over Maine!

  1. Mike - thanks. My husband, Hugh, would like to send a story from the time that he and Leif worked together in Austin. Is there a way to get it to you or someone else via email, to be read at the memorial?

  2. Thanks, Birgit. Please send any and all stories to Leif's email address. We are still accessing it and it is the most suitable repository.

    1. Thank you for this info. I've just spent some time searching online for something to send to the memorial, since I cannot attend. I wanted to somehow get a quiche or something yummy delivered, but that's proving not so easy to do, and I just suddenly realized that Leif wouldn't have wanted flowers (never even considered them) or gift baskets or...things...he was an experience person, not a thing person. And so I'm going to make another donation to LLS and I'll send something along to Leif's email when I can order my thoughts. Thank you for keeping those of us that are far away in the loop. It is appreciated.

  3. Leif might prefer money be spent on things other than flowers--though I don't directly know. One thing that I do feel like I know is that he likes flowers alot. I'm guessing that it was a bummer for him to have to stay away from them when his immune system was weak. My daughter Cat and Leif have a special connection over dandelions. : )

    1. People can send donations in lieu of flowers to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or the science education nonprofit of their choice.

    2. Dandelions are my very favorite flower. Anyone who calls them a weed is just delusional. And I'll be making another donation to LLS plus the run is very much still on. First donations from strangers (to Leif) are coming in, and that makes me smile.

Do people need the list of hotels or is Google search covering that?

    1. Let's ask: Anyone need hotel recommendations? Some quick ones: the Yankee Clipper gets good reviews on Trip Advisor; Belfast Bay Inn is awesome if you have deep pockets.

  5. I think donating to lymphoma would be a good idea. And I'm bringing the Nutella tomorrow - it was a passion that Leif and I shared (that and a very silly warped sense of humor, usually with a lot of scientific references!) -Karen

  6. I just want to say how amazing it was to see how many people loved Leif and showed their support to Becky. It was truly inspirational. Leif was truly loved and led an unparalleled life. I know those touched by his quirkiness will truly never forget.

  7. We're going to try to build Leif's Fiddlehead foldable cabin!

If you want to be kept posted about our progress sign up here: http://practicalbodywork.us2.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=e479d972ba66a7fa560c37c0d&id=ea1d6c7239 .

Becky's sis Stephanie set up the mailing list sign up and is playing a key role in efforts to get the cabin built. Becky's brother Doug is also playing a crucial role. Mike Aaron is also helping, and Kirk Hotte might help, too. Lloyd Weaver has also offered to help in any way that he might be able to.

Wouldn't it be great to see a full-sized, working, Leif-designed, foldable cabin?!?!

If you also would like to help, you're welcome to contact me: mitch.henrion at-sign gmail.com .
